An Inspired Soarer // Justin’s 95 Sc400

Words & photography by Ryan Burdick exclusively for HappyStance.net

Justin Barber, from Goldsboro, NC, has always been a big Toyota fan. He has owned multiple Toyota vehicles, to include heavily modified MkIII Supras, Multiple AE86 corollas(to include 2 SR20det powered ones), an MkII Supra, and even a jacked up pre-runner style Tacoma. He purchased a Lexus SC400 after graduating basic training for the United States Air Force. The original plans for his SC were to make it look and sound just a little bit better, this was until his first deployment. Rather then follow others on their SC400 builds and swap the 1UZ-fe out for a 1JZ or 2JZ, he decided to keep the original Lexus V8. The only downfall of this was the 1UZ-fe was only offered as an automatic transmission. But then as he was doing more research he found Bullet Cars Australia. They offered a 1UZ-W58 5 speed manual conversion kit.

So while he was deployed he began ordering parts as a new found desire to set standards with the 1UZ powered SC’s began. He got home from Afghanistan to a massive pile of parts waiting for him. The first thing to be taken care of was swapping out the automatic transmission for the 5 speed W58. Upon completing the 5 speed swap and getting the SC back on the road, he was on the way home from a friends house during a storm and ended up spinning out and destroying the freshly swapped Lexus. He only had liability insurance on it, and with the wreck being considered an “act of god”, his insurance company claimed it as a total loss.

He was now stuck with a pile of metal somewhat resembling his SC. As he began looking for a new vehicle, nothing jumped out at him. This was until he found another SC400. He instantly purchased the vehicle from what was the original owner. Right away he started sifting through what was left of his wrecked Lexus and the first thing to come out of it was the 5 Speed swap, which was completely undamaged. After the swap had been redone he nicknamed the new SC400, Phoenix.

Seeing as how his goal was essentially to resurrect his dreams from the old SC into this one, it seemed a proper fit. Shortly after he got Phoenix back onto the road, he was told he had orders…..to Afghanistan….again. So, staying true to his time attack themed build, he ordered a ton more parts for Phoenix to include parts from Work Wheels, Vertex, and multiple other companies. Here is the current product. Enjoy.

His future plans: Individual Throttle Bodies, Vortec V3 Supercharger w/ supporting mods to reliably support 500rwhp, KAAZ or Torssin 2-Way LSD, Big Country Labs Rear Wing, Plans to go more partial time attack with an interior half cage in the rear, Rear seat delete,  Track and toe bars, Big brake kit.

From Justin Barber:
Shout out to Steve Nguyen and my family at Insane Stance & Offset for support and the constant drive to modify my car in a clean manner, Jeremy Clack and Chet Massey of The BodyShop of Garner for the hard work, Exotics Inc. for the cut/buff and gold pin striping, Tom Rabold at Bullet Cars Australia for the manual swap kit and inside information on how to make the swap work and everyone else that has been an influence in the build of this car.
